Olay, Olay, Olay, Olay, Feelin' Hot, Hot, Hot!

This is a sponsored review from BlogHer and OLAY.

I’m not a beauty blogger per se, but longtime readers know I’m fully committed to keeping myself looking at least moderately presentable most of the time. Like, remember when I turned myself orange in an attempt to seduce Jeff with my “natural” golden tan? Or that Hannibal Lecter mask from La Mer that prompted Jeff to give himself a porn ‘stache? I should get extra points for the full-time job that is taming my natural unibrow, not to mention the considerable artistic skills required to camouflage my exciting new adult acne and spider veins. But no one, save for the overly blunt Korean ladies at my local nail salon, who inform me that I really should wax my upper lip, seems to be keeping score.

Anyway.

I don’t have a lot of time to--as Jeff so lovingly puts it--“paint my face” in the mornings, seeing as I generally hit the snooze button at least twenty times in order to let the pillow lines really settle into my cheeks. So when Olay offered to send me its Total Effects Line and Dark Circle Minimizing Brush (visit the official site), which promises to simultaneously tighten and plump my peepers, lighten my cobwebby under-eye area, and deliver 7 anti-aging benefits in all of the five seconds it takes to apply, I jumped at the chance.

Because I am nothing if not super-scientific, I am presenting my findings in the format of a high school lab report. Ahem.

Introduction:
Here are my crow’s feet and under-eye bag in their natural state:

Bloodshot eyes included at no extra charge!
I once got into a bar without ID just by smiling for the bouncer. TRUE STORY.

The purpose of my experiment is to determine whether Olay’s Total Effects Line and Dark Circle Minimizing Brush will help to ensure that this never happens again.

Materials:
1 Olay Total Effects Line and Dark Circle Minimizing Brush
1 Bathroom mirror
1 Middle Finger (N.B. for application purposes, not for bird-flipping)
1 Nikon SLR camera, for documentation purposes

Method:
Each morning and evening for a week, after washing my face and applying moisturizer, I clicked the Olay TELADCMB (sorry, could not continue to type that out) to release a pea-sized pearl of product that I gently applied to my under-eye circles and lines using the middle finger of my right hand. Then I stared at myself for awhile, examining my pores and contemplating the ramifications of finding a gray eyebrow hair.

Discussion and Conclusion:
I am between eye creams, so it felt incredibly luxurious to use the Olay TELADCMB. After a few weeks, I did notice a small improvement in the condition of my skin in the ocular (fancy word for eye!) area, and my bags seemed less pronounced:

Natural light: nature's Photoshop!
The drawback, for me, was the color. The Olay TELADCMB formula is a bronze-y beige--the better to blend away imperfections with, my dear--but on my Edward Cullen complexion, unless blended well, it kind of looked like my eyes went to Miami without the rest of my head.

Still, that was easy enough to correct, and I’m glad to know that my blogging-abused eyes are getting a little R&R from 7 anti-aging benefits. Plus, it’s fast and extremely easy to use, a virtue in any beauty product.

Okay, now’s the fun part: You tell me how you simplify your beauty routine when you’re tired or strapped for time, and you could win a $100 Spa Finder gift card! (Visit the BlogHer roundup page for other chances to win).

  1. I have simplied my beauty routine several ways. By skipping heavy foundation (particularly in the summer) and just using a powder. This works since my skin is fairly even. I also wash my hair at night and in the morning I put it up while I shower. I rarely have to blow dry which both saves my hair and makes it faster to get ready.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I simplify it by skipping most steps. I wash and moisturize but that is about all i have time for. I'd love to be able to pamper myself more, but right now, will settle for just being clean.

    ReplyDelete
  3. If I'm tired or in a hurry, I usually just put on some powder to take away the shine(I accidentally just typed shite... lol), and some mascara and head out. I have pretty short hair, so some days I don't even blow dry it when I get out of the shower.

    ReplyDelete
  4. For someone with long hair, blow drying my hair tends to not be an option since it usually makes me sweat enough to need another shower. I'll typically sleep on my hair wet, usually in a bun or just down, and then in the morning, I can pick from slightly wavy, bed head look or just plug in my flat iron and go straight - saves about 40 minutes since I'm skipping the blow drying. And it's better for your hair!

  5. I have my "Oh shit, I'm late" routine:
    • baby powder on my greasy hair roots
    • quick splash of cold water to wake up my face and olay spf 15 moisturizer
    • deodorant
    • mineral powder foundation
    • blush and mascara and lip balm

Oh, and I put on some clothes so I don't get fired for showing up to work in my underwear. :)

    ReplyDelete
  6. This is my area of beauty expertise since I, like you, LOVE the snooze button! If I wake up too late I usually spray my hair with dry shampoo. Since it's usually already wavy and slept-on I toss it up in a bun on the top of my head and add some BedHead Curl Spray. I keep it up there while I brush my teeth and wash my face and dress, and then when I take it down it looks cute-curly instead of neglected-curly!

  7. baby powder on greasy hair!!! best secret ever!!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. When I am too late to properly do a good eye shadow, I just use my blush on my eyelids and throw on a tad of mascara. Looks more like just in from the pool then just out of bed! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  9. My new years resolution this year was to wear more make-up. I think my students appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I went from being a full-time massage therapist in a 4-star spa (required to make an effort since we're in the beauty 'industry') to being a stay-at-home mom (no time or energy to make an effort).

I gave up planning out fun eye shadow/liner combos. There just wasn't time. Now (after almost 2 years) I can usually manage to slap on concealer, mascara and lip gloss. My indulgence is face masks. I spend 30 minutes a week with a face mask, and my almost-40-year-old skin looks nine bazillion times better.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I simplify my beauty routine (aka not having time after bolting from bed) by:

a.) Bypassing the shampoo and conditioner and keeping my hair's natural oils intact for an extra day (you don't want to over-wash your hair, and I don't have the time anyway.)

b.) Not using harsh cleansers on my face (to avoid dry skin). Moisturizer will do.

c.) No eye liner or mascara needed - make em look bigger underneath your glasses (no time for contacts!) with simple eye shadow and eyebrow curler.

For days where you start off feeling crappy, don't need to weighed down with more crap on your face!

    ReplyDelete
  12. I simplify my routine by using dry shampoo (possibly the best invention ever) and using only moisturizer and liquid foundation most days. If I bust out the mascara it's going to be a good night!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I simplify by using moisturizer and eye concealer ONLY when necessary. Other than that, it's black mascara and some curl serum through my hair and out the door!

I've just started trying Dry Shampoo and I can go every other day without a wash and that's pretty great. On those days I can actually take the time to curl my hair, masking that I haven't washed it.

If eye shadow and eye liner come out, it must mean it's a night out with the girls, that means business!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I simplify by using a two-in-one sunscreen and moisturizer and by wearing my hair curly rather than going through the whole hair dryer, straightening iron, omgisitperfect routine.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm a fan of tinted moisturizer...especially in the summer. It does a decent job of concealing flaws and it saves me a step when I'm getting ready in the morning!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I like products that serve multiple uses - pencils that add eye color, lip color, AND cheek color...tinted moisturizer...and baby power for the hair is clutch for those mornings without showers...

    ReplyDelete
  17. If I'm running REALLY late (and I can't believe I'm saying this) I'll do a whore's bath (washing real quick between - ahem - your legs and under your arms), splash my face with cold water, make it a "hat day", and bring an eyelash curler, mascara, and lip balm to work.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My quickie routine- used for any morning I'm not at work is to clean my face, moisturize, foundation and mascara. Hair up in a bun.

And I'm not too ashamed to say right out here that 6 weeks ago I switched to Olay cleansers and moisturizers because I'm (ahem) at "that age" that beauty products for young girls don't work for my skin any more. And I'm loving it!

  19. The best thing I have ever done to save time on a beauty routine was a little bit drastic, but completely worth it. I cut off all of my long, black hair and settled with a pixie cut colored as close to my natural hair color as possible. Now I save time by not having to blow dry or flat iron my ridiculously thick hair, and the (much) lighter shade goes perfectly with my skin tone sans makeup. My eyes look brighter and my skin tone looks even with less contrast from my hair. Most days I just brush some mascara on to darken my lashes and run a little bit of Biosilk through my hair to keep it smooth.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have simplified in a number of ways: using a cleanser that also removes make-up, using a moisturizer that has sunscreen in it (Olay!),
using conditioner only, roots to ends on my hair; and getting facials- I find I need less make-up now that I get regular facials, plus it's sooo relaxing. Like Jennifer, I also use my bronzer on my lids, which when combined with mascara, is a great, easy summer look.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Short hair and dust it! Dust It is a wonder product that adds volume and hides greasiness :) I have to take shortcuts on the hair portion of my beauty routine, because let's face it - cutting corners on my makeup routine only leaves me looking scary as hell.

  23. i simplify it by not washing my hair daily, using a face moisturizer AND body lotion that both have an SPF, and i only wear mascara ;) cuz really, all you need is some beautiful lashes

    ReplyDelete
  24. I simplified my routine by starting to work from home. My dog doesn't care if my hair is dirty or and I'm not wearing any makeup!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I shower at night. This is something I can get away with because I have SUPER straight hair (thanks genetics) Then I skip the foundation, because I OWN my pimples. Then it is just a simple eyeliner and mascara application before I am good to go.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've cut back to the bare minimum for makeup, foundation, blush, powder. I don't think I remember how to use eye makeup. So sad. I'll also skip washing my hair if I'm running late, and then put it up in a (hopefully) cute ponytail.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Uh, to simplify I just don't wear makeup and go into work/grocery store/boyfriend's house looking like the monster I really am. It's horrifying, but at least I know my boyfriend actually likes me!

If I'm trying to simplify bust still look human, I will throw on some mascara and under eye concealer. They make a big difference.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have long hair and I'm pretty lazy when it comes to washing it (don't tell!). I try to make it 3 or 4 days in between, so I'll use dry shampoo or just wash my bangs. ...and the ponytail is my best friend.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If I am strapped for time, I'll just put on mascara & lip gloss, enough to make me feel confident to walk out the door!

  33. For days when I don't care, don't feel up to, or just don't have time to 'put my face on' it's usually moisturizer and chapstick.

I used to use concealer under my eyes ALL THE TIME. But no matter what I tried the purple that God saw fit to smudge my face with is still visible. Just vetoing that step alone simplified things tons.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Best get ready quick tricks: Get a compact foundation. Apply light pink undereye concealer that also has illuminating properties (this counter acts the bluish/greyish circles- I prefer Estee Lauder's Ideal Light). Peachey blush looks great on everyone and makes you look alive after a long night or sickness. Mascara opens everyone's eyes regardless of shape and makes you look pulled together/awake. Finally, dry shampoo is a godsend!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I simplify by using Cetaphil at night- doubles as a cleanser and a moisturizer. Just wipe on (hand), wipe off (tissue). In addition to saving time, my skin has gotten clearer, so double bonus!

  38. HAVE MORE SEX.

Seriously. It's better than any moisturizer or beauty product I've tried. It makes my skin look clearer and brighter. I'm in a better mood, so I'm nicer, so I smile more (which does great things for beauty as well). I feel more attractive, so I don't obsess as much. Also, my husband thinks this is the best skincare regimen ever.

    Everybody wins.

  39. Just to clarify: More sex means since I look and feel better, getting ready doesn't take as long.

I often shower at night and wear little to no makeup (moisturizer always, lipstick/gloss sometimes, almost nothing else - except for dressy situations like weddings where I might go with mascara and a swipe of eyeshadow). 56. I've simplified my makeup routine by switching to mineral makeup & mascara. It literally takes me 5 minutes in the morning to get ready, and with a 4 month old in tow, that's perfect! Plus, I love how light it feels on my face. I also shower at night & dry my hair then (the longest thing for me in my beauty routine), so I can just brush, straighten, or pull back & go in the morning, depending on how I'm feeling. I'm a lot less picky about what I look like these days, which is an awesome feeling. :)

  119. When I'm short on time, I'll simplify by putting on my moisturizer (w/spf) and some lip gloss. Moisturizer makes any face look immediately better and you gotta have the sun protection too. Thanks!

  132. I don't have a beauty routine per se, but I do take a little extra time getting my hair just right. So, when rushed I will do a quick dry and go.
